MDS Summer School

ParkinsonNet & MDS Summer School for Physiotherapists

Our aim is to further increase Parkinson-specific expertise among physiotherapists throughout Europe through interactions with experts in the field and with each other. Therefore, in 2013 a very first MDS Allied Health Professional Summer School was organized in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. This 3-day Summer School was developed as a joint collaboration between the European Section of the Movement Disorders Society (ES-MDS) and ParkinsonNet. A report is available here. In 2014, as second edition was collaboratively organized in Torres Vedras under supervision of with Prof. dr. Joaquim Ferreira (www.cnscampus.com).

The Summer Schools are intended for physiotherapists who already have some experience in the management of Parkinson's disease and who are interested in further education and international collaboration. Teaching is done by outstanding, international faculty of senior movement disorder specialists, including topic presentations, discussion and patient practicum. Topics include the clinical picture of Parkinson's disease, how to use the European Physiotherapy Guideline Parkinson's Disease for decisionsupport, and how to optimise Parkinson care. At the conclusion of the Summer schools, you should be able to accomplish the following:

  • Examine a person with Parkinson's disease, using appropriate measurement tools
  • Set SMART, core area related treatment goals, in joint collaboration with the patient
  • Design, review and modify a patient specific treatment plan
  • Support a person with Parkinson's disease in movement-related self-management
  • Collaborate with referring physicians and other health professionals

Future Summer Schools will be announced on this page.
